Two men and a woman from Chisinau face a maximum of ten years in jail for smuggling clothes and footwear to the value of over 2.5 million from Turkey. The items were seized and are to be confiscated.

The Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases said the stuffs were smuggled into Moldova by a passenger minibus and also hidden in parcels brought from Turkey. When at the destination, the goods were distributed to traders in Chisinau.

As a result of a filter set up by operative services at the Giurgiulești customs post, there were found sacks with clothes and footwear, with the merchandise not being indicated in the customs declaration submitted by the driver.

Shortly afterward, officers of the Customs Service and organized crime prosecutors carried out searches at a number of addresses in Chisinau, including the homes, storehouses and shores owned by the suspects. More items without documents of origin were discovered there.

Contacted by IPN for details, Valeriu Bodean, deputy chief prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases, said the goods were only seized. If the blame of the suspects is proven, these will be confiscated and put up for sale by the Customs Service in order to collect revenues into the budget.
