Three police officers of the Patrol and Sentinel Regiment “Scut”, who in 2005 severely beat a man inside the Ciocana Police Commissariat, were sentenced to six years in jail each, IPN has learned from the Prosecutor General’s Office.

According to prosecutors, in December 2005 the culprits hit the person they brought to the Commissariat for several times. As a result of the sustained injuries, the victim died in two days. In February 2009, the culprits were acquitted, but the prosecutors challenged the decision in a higher court.

This case was also examined by the European Court of Human Rights, which ascertained a series of violations, including procedural ones. In December 2012, the Supreme Court of Justice ordered that a different panel of judges of the same court should retry the case.

This September, the Chisinau Appeals Court sentenced the police officers to six years behind bars each and banned them from holding responsible posts in the Ministry of the Interior for a period of two years. This decision is definitive, but can be yet appealed to the Supreme Court of Justice.
