Moldova and Ukraine should quit the Community of Independent States (CIS) in a single move with Georgia, considers the National Liberal Party (PNL) from Moldova. The party condemns the Russian military aggression on Georgia and maintains the events from Georgia are very important for Moldova, where there is a similar frozen conflict, as Russia plays a similar role of a main international mediator.
PNL vice president, Anatol Taranu, told a news conference at Info-Prim Neo News Agency on Wednesday, that Moldova could pass through Georgia's sad experience, unless it is able to learn the lessons from the events in Georgia.
Russia motivated its intervention into Georgia also through its CIS peace-keeping mandate, Taranu says. “In this regard, Georgia's leaving the CIS is delayed two weeks.” According to him, the CIS way collides with the European aspirations of the three states.
PNL president, Vitalia Pavlicenco, says Russia's “military aggression against Georgia irreversibly compromises its status of an international mediator in the frozen conflicts within the CIS space.” “Neither can Russia pretend to represent a peace-keeping force in conflict areas,” she said.
PNL asks the Moldovan Government to urgent review the National Security Concept in terms of quicker integrating into NATO's defense system – “the only one able to guarantee Moldova's security.” PNL also asks the Government to hold an international conference to be attended by the USA and the EU to modify the international mediating mechanism and the structure of the peace-keepers in the conflict area, what would exclude Russia's abuses and would guarantee the impartiality of the mediators and of peace-keepers.
PNL asks the General Prosecutor to sue Transnistria's leaders who have encouraged and sent volunteers in the hostilities from Georgia. According to the PNL leaders, the moratorium stated by Transnistria on its contacts with Moldova, until Moldova “denounces Georgia's aggression” proves the solidarity of the breakaway regimes. Instead, the Moldovan authorities “break the common front which should exist in relation to Russia's aggression and in actions counteracting the secessionist regimes,” the National-Libreals consider.
Georgia's president Mikheil Saakashvili announced Tuesday his country was quitting the CIS and called on Ukraine and other countries to do the same, as Russia plays there a domineering role.
