About 120 members of the Parliaments of Romania, Moldova and the EU support the extension of DiscoverEU between Iasi and Chisinau and also the extension to Odessa, after the war in Ukraine is over.
In a news conference hosted by IPN, programs director of the Institute for Development and Expertise of Projects of Moldova (IDEP) Iurie Calestru said that when the Iasi-Chisinau extension is introduced, the initiative will benefit about 10,000 people in the Republic of Moldova and in Iasi County, who will become DiscoverEU ambassadors. The letters are addressed to the central authorities of the Republic of Moldova and Romania and to the European Commission.
According to Iurie Calestru, 36 MEPs signed a letter addressed to European Commissioner Mariya Gabriel who is in charge of the DiscoverEU program that forms part of ERASMUS+ at European level. ”We respectfully ask to approve and launch the emblematic initiative DiscoverEU between Iasi and Chisinau, with continuation to Odessa after the war,” noted Iurie Calestru.
“Launched by the European Union in 2018, DiscoverEU proved its sustainability, enabling about 200,000 young people in the EU to travel to different countries, knowing the culture and people, enjoying the advantages of free movement,” stated the IDEP programs director.
Iurie Calestru also said that the initiative that was signed by 36 MEPs represents enormous responsibility and a credit of trust and all the efforts will be therefore made to have this initiative validated and launched by the European Commission.
“We must transmit signals to the young people to make them believe in the European and prosperous future of the Republic of Moldova,” stated the IDEP programs director. He added that the EU is ready to always support the Republic of Moldova. The emblematic European initiative DiscoverEU is very important when the European citizens want to offer the citizens of the EU candidate country the best projects that in time showed their efficiency and the increased interest they hold for the young people.
