The network of technical vocational education institutions will be restructured according to a plan of action covering the period until 2020 that was approved by the Government, IPN reports. Minister of Education Maia Sandu said the plan was worked out based on the results of the mapping that covered 97 education institutions with over 42,000 students.

Of the total of 97 technical vocational schools, 24 are classed as good, 49 – as average, while 24 – as weak. It was established that the programs of study are mainly outdated and too theoretical in character, the infrastructure is poor, while the number of employees per student is three times higher than the European average.

“The technical vocational education represents a very important sector in the European countries as it trains specialists needed to ensure the functioning of the economy and of the whole state. Thus, the modernization of this type of education became absolutely necessary for stimulating the changes expected by society,” stated Maia Sandu.

The plan of action for restructuring the network of technical vocational education institutions envisions the creation of ten centers of excellence that will become benchmarks in this type of education. Under the Education Code, the vocational schools will be reorganized into professional education institutions. To get qualifications, the students will study for at least two years there.
