A commemorative exhibition dedicated to painter Mihai Grecu was opened at the National Museum of Arts of Moldova on November 22, when the artist who is considered the parent of the national painting school would have turned 100, IPN reports.

The Museum’s director Tudor Zbarnea in the opening of the event said the exhibition represents homage rendered to artist Mihai Grecu, who dominated a number of generations of artists and is considered school chief in the area where we live. The exhibit, which includes 60 works that form part of the Museum’s stock, is staged chronologically, in retrospective context, and shows the stages through which the artist went.

Plastic artist Ghenadie Jalba, vice president of the Union of Plastic Artists of Moldova, said the Union initiated a contest to design the medal “Mihai Grecu”. One-two medals will be awarded during the year to personalities from the field of plastic arts who distinguish themselves by their activities. The medal will be conferred in parallel with the award “Mihai Grecu” that is provided by the Union.

In accordance with the Union’s decision, the first three medals were awarded to Ludmila Toma, Doctor of Arts Study, the family of Tamara Grecu (daughter) and Dimitrie Peicev (son-in-law) for promoting the artist’s works and the National Museum of Arts.

The event involved ambassadors and members of embassies working in Moldova, officials and representatives of the national cultural elite, including painters, writers, art critics, journalists and students of art schools.

The exhibition will continue until January 8, 2017.
