The political class of Moldova must regain the confidence of the people, the European Union and the international financial organizations, Lithuanian MEP Petras Auštrevičius stated in an interview for Radio Free Europe. According to him, confidence in the Moldovan authorities will be restored only when the persons responsible for the disappearance of the US$1 billion are identified and held accountable, IPN reports.

The MEP voiced hope that investors will come to Moldova when the investigation into the theft of the US$1 billion is completed. He considers that this will be a painful process for some of the representatives of the government.

Petras Auštrevičius also said that the financial assistance from the EU is absent because there is no agreement with the International Monetary Fund. According to him, such an agreement does not exist because no results were achieved in the implementation of reforms and removal of problems from the banking sector.

“I must say that this assistance will probably not come because everyone is tired: we want to see concrete results: We are not angry with the Republic of Moldova, but want the rulers in Chisinau to understand that we speak about them, not about Zimbabwe,” stated the MEP.

In another development, Petras Auštrevičius noted that the reforms in the Republic of Moldova should be done twice faster given the frozen conflict existing on its territory. He considers that if things go well in terms of reforms, the Transnistrian region will look at Chisinau in a different way.
