Villages of Briceni district were affected and house yards were flooded in parts as a result of the recent heavy rain. In some of the localities, it was decided to evacuate the population, Prime Minister Ion Chicu stated in the June 24 meeting of the Cabinet, instructing those in charge to take measures to protect the people and their property in connection with the danger of floods, IPN reports.

The official noted that he made a visit to the Costești-Stânca Hydropower Plant where he discussed with heads of districts situated along the Prut River. The danger of inundation is faced both in the areas situated near the Prut and in those located near the Nistru.

“The weather conditions, the precipitation should be permanently monitored so as to prevent the loss of human lives and property. We have the experience of 2008 and the unhappier experience of 2012, but we should get ready and I hope we will overcome this situation,” stated Ion Chicu.

He added that the rain in a number of localities caused damage and this is being assessed by local commissions for emergencies and the authorities will provide compensations.

The State Hydrometeorological Service has issued an orange code advisory for possible floods on the Prut River following the recent heavy precipitation. The level of water on the Criva-Costeşti-Stânca section is expected to rise by about 2 meters.

In connection with the decision to increase the volume of water discharged from the Costești-Stânca accumulation lake to 510 m3/s, taken by the expert subcommission, the level of water on the Costeşti-Stânca-Cantemir sector is projected to increase by 2.5-3.5 meters, while on the Cantemir-Brânza sector by 1-2 meters.
