The Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM) took cognizance of the decision by the Liberal Party (PL) to withdraw from the government coalition. In a press release issued on May 26, the PDM says this decision is to be analyzed in its weekly meeting that will take place on May 30, when it will provide detailed comments on the issue, IPN reports.
“At this stage, we will only say that we understand particular statements or emotive reactions, but the problems related to cases of corruption should be clarified in courts of law, not inside parties or political alliances. The ruling alliance continues to be fully functional and the Government has all the political support for continuing implementing the assumed reforms and government program,” said the PDM.
The leader of the PL Mihai Ghimpu said the party decided to leave the government coalition and the Liberal Party renounces membership of the parliamentary alliance. The announcement was made after the May 26 meeting of the PL’s National Council that was convoked following the arrest of the first deputy chairman of the Liberal Party Dorin Chirtoaca, Mayor General of Chisinau municipality.
According to Mihai Ghimpu, the participation by the PL in the ruling alliance cost the party a lot. This affected its image and made it lose many heavyweights.
