The Communist, Democratic and Socialist MPs voted for creating a working group that will analyze legal and constitutional aspects of Moldova’s status of neutrality. The decision on the constitution of such a group was drawn up by the Democratic MPs in the context of the discussions on a bill concerning Moldova’s status of permanent neutrality that was drafted by the Communists, IPN reports.

The Liberal-Democratic and Liberal lawmakers opposed such an initiative and didn’t delegate representatives to work on the group. The Liberals consider this legislative initiative is a new attempt by Moscow to hamper Moldova’s European course, while the Lib-Dems believe that Moldova does not need such a law at a time when its neutrality status is enshrined in the Constitution, but is not respected, given the Russian military presence on the country’s territory.

Democratic MP Dumitru Diacov, one of the authors of the initiative to form the working group, explained that the problem of neutrality is a difficult and delicate matter that needs to be examined so that there is a broad consensus about the future law.

The working group consists of the Socialist MPs Andrei Neguta and Vasile Bolea, Democratic MPs Dumitru Diacov and Sergiu Sirbu, and Communist MPs Vladimir Vitiuc and Artur Reshetnikov.
