The presidential election and the national constitutional referendum on the European integration are expected to take place on October 20. This date is proposed in a decision drafted by MPs of the parliamentary majority, IPN reports.

The MPs of the Party of Action and Solidarity submitted to the Constitutional Court the notification regarding the initiative to revise the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova. It contains the draft decision stipulating the date of the election and also the question that is to be asked in the national constitutional referendum: “Are you for the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union?”.

The draft law to amend the Constitution is also attached to the notification. According to the bill, the preamble of the Constitution is to be completed with two new paragraphs: “Reaffirming the European identity of the people of the Republic of Moldova and the irreversibility of the European path; Declaring the integration into the European Union as a strategic objective of the Republic of Moldova”.

Also, the draft law provides for the completion of the Constitution with a new title – Title V - which is entitled “Integration into the European Union”. It stipulates the joining by the Republic of Moldova of the founding treaties of the European Union and of the acts that revise the founding treaties of the European Union.

The referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union was announced by President Maia Sandu at an event where the head of state informed that she intends to run for a new presidential term.
