Next week the Moldovan Parliament will hold hearings on the recent killing of Oleg Horjan, the former leader of the Communist Party of the Transnistrian region. This was announced by Deputy Speaker Mihai Popșoi.

Representatives from relevant institutions will be invited to speak on various circumstances of the case and on what steps have been taken by the Moldovan authorities. Also, international organizations will be requested to contribute to the elucidation of this case.

“This crime is a defiance to fundamental human principles and to the desire of the absolute majority of citizens on both banks of the Nistru River to strengthen mutual confidence and live in peace and comity”, stated Mihai Popșoi.

The local press reported that Transnistria’s de facto leader Vadim Krasnoselski today had a meeting with EU Ambassador to Moldova Jānis Mažeiks, where they discussed the murder of Oleg Horjan. Krasnoselski promised to personally supervise the investigation and, if needed, to seek legal assistance from the Moldovan law enforcement.

On Monday, Horjan’s body was found by his wife lying beside an opened and emptied strongbox in their suburban home. The local police suggested the case would be investigated as a suspected robbery, among other leads.

Formerly a local opposition lawmaker, Horjan was released from jail in December 2022 after spending almost four and a half years in detention in what was widely believed to be a politically motivated case.
