The Public Association “Parliament 90” says it will convene the Great National Assembly after 20 years. The announcement was made by the Association’s chairman Pantelei Sandulachi on April 29, Info-Prim Neo reports. The statement on the convocation of the Great National Assembly was unanimously approved at a meeting held one day earlier, Sandulachi told a news conference. According to him, the members of the Association had been motivated by the deterioration of the political climate in Moldova, especially after the April 5 elections. The ruling party caused the conflict, inciting even violence on April 7 through the agency of the police and suspect groups and acting in a very provocative manner, the Association says in a statement. The signatories consider that the holding of a large-scale assembly will contribute to identifying solutions for restoring democracy and national consensus in the state. They have announced that the committee for the organization of the Great National Assembly will be set up within 10 days from today. The committee will be composed of representatives of the Association “Parliament 90”, the Writers Union of Moldova and the political parties that entered the Parliament, including the Communist Party of Moldova (PCRM). The extra-parliamentary parties and the interested NGOs and creation unions will delegate by one person. Sandulachi proposed holding the assembly in the Great National Assembly Square on August 29, starting at 11.00 - as 20 years ago. He also said that the meeting will be held under any circumstances, regardless of the number of participants. “We are aware that our action is not welcomed by the governors and that the state bodies will become very interested in this association ( “Parliament 90” – e.n.) following the announcement, but we went through harder times and we survived.” Attending the conference, the member of the Association’s presidium Nicolae Dabija said that the assembly is needed in order to encourage the people not to leave the country and will simultaneously constitute a report on what has been achieved and what not after the first Great National Assembly. The results of the committee for the organization of the Great National Assembly will be made public in 2-3 weeks, representatives of “Parliament 90” said. The Association “Parliament 90” was founded in July 2000 and has over 100 members – MPs in the first Parliament of Moldova. Its aim is to defend the principles of Moldova’s declaration of independence. The Association held its last meeting on February 28, 2009, when it elected its administration bodies.
