Over 1,700 persons will be pardoned on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the declaring of Independence. The figure is stipulated in a bill that specifies the criteria based on which the procedure will be applied. The measure covers accused persons and convicts who have positive characteristics and atre less likely to reoffend. The pardoning does not apply to those who committed very serious offences and acts of corruption, regardless of their gravity, IPN reports.

Of the over 1,700 persons, not all of them will be set free immediately. In some of the cases, the punishment will be shortened and the prisoners will be released before the expected time. For particular categories of offenses, the criminal procedure will stop at the investigation stage or at the trial stage.

Among those who will be pardoned are women who, before the coming into force of this law, had been sentenced to up to seven years in jail inclusive, have children younger than 12 and weren’t deprived of parental rights as well as women who had been sentenced to at most nine years in jail and have three and more children younger than 12 and weren’t deprived of parental rights and also persons jailed for committing offenses out of imprudence, which didn’t result in death.

When the bill is adopted, a special commission will be constituted to analyze the files of those entitled to pardoning. The National Administration of Penitentiaries will present the list of these persons to the commission.

After being set free, the persons will get a lump sum equal to 75% of the average official salary that this year is 7,953 lei.
