The co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Lise Christoffersen and Piotr Wach, completed their monitoring mission in Moldova and summed up the results of their visit. The two said that Moldova made progress in doing the prosecution service reform, but warned that a thorough investigation is needed into the theft of US$1 billion from the banking system, IPN reports.

Lise Christoffersen said the situation in the banking system preoccupies the co-rapporteurs and this is one of the major concerns over the fight against corruption in Moldova.

The PACE co-rapporteurs also said that they are concerned about the future presidential elections given the previous political blockages. Lise Christoffersen noted that the country experienced political deadlocks and certainty that these will be avoided in the next presidential elections is wanted.

Piotr Wach said this time they will prepare not a report on the monitoring mission, but a broad informative note about the general situation in Moldova. This note will be presented in the June meeting of the Monitoring Committee.

The last monitoring visit was paid last September.
