Slightly over 4% of the respondents of a poll conducted by the sociological company IData, which was commissioned by the Institute for Strategic Initiatives (IPIS), said that they possess particular details about the foreign financial assistance, such as the sums, goal and who offered the money. Another over 49% of those polled know such information to a particular extent. Slightly over 11% said that they are not interested and didn’t look for information about the foreign assistance, while over 35% don’t know at all such information. Most of the persons who look for information about foreign assistance inform themselves through television, social media or websites. Approximately 11% don’t look for such information.

In a news conference hosted by IPN, Veronica Ateș, IData executive vice president, said that over 25% of the respondents believe that Moldova needs foreign financial assistance fully or to a very great extent, over 41% - to a great extent, 16% - to a particular extent, about 14% - to a small extent or not at all.

Nearly half of those surveyed fully or to a great extent agree that the Republic of Moldova, owing to the foreign assistance, develops and goes on, despite the war in Ukraine. About 4% of those interviewed agree to a small extent or do not agree at all with such an assertion. One third of the respondents agree that the foreign funds are used to pay salaries and pensions to each citizen, while about 46% don’t agree or agree to a small extent with such an assertion.

Over 43% of the respondents agree that Moldova should cope with the own forces to become independent. Another 18% don’t agree with such an assertion. Approximately 63% believe that Moldova cannot develop without foreign financial assistance, while about 30% agree with such an assertion to a small extent or disagree with it.

According to IPIS executive director Vadim Pistrinciuc, the data show that the people know and look for information about foreign assistance. In general, however, the people realize that without resources, the country cannot develop now, in the context of the war, or realize that the difference in development between Moldova at present and what the people want to see cannot be overcome without foreign support.

The same poll reveals that 10% of the respondents believe that Moldova receives non-reimbursable financial assistance, 37% consider that it takes out loans, while over 46% think that Moldova uses both of the variants. About 6% didn’t have a response to this question. Asked who they believe offers the largest financial assistance to Moldova, with the question being with multiple answers, 73% said the EU, 36% - Romania, while slightly over 35% - the U.S.

The data were collected through face-to-face interviews during August 16 – September 5. The survey covered a representative sample of 1,130 persons older than 18 from Moldova. The margin of sampling error is at most 2.9%.
