The European Moldova Assembly staged in the central square of Chisinau today involved more than 75,000 people. The figure was fixed by the National Police at 12:30pm. Owing to the heavy traffic, many people didn’t manage to reach the venue of the event.

Asked by IPN to provide details, the chief of the General Police Inspectorate Viorel Cernăuțeanu said there were reported no incidents. “At about 12:30pm, when we did the first counting, we determined an estimated 75,000 to 80,000 people. Regrettably, we ascertained that citizens got struck on some of the arteries of the municipality of Chisinau and could not get to the central square. A lot of units of transport remained blocked on the outskirts of Chisinau,” stated Viorel Cernăuțeanu.

According to him, there was heavy traffic not only in Chisinau, but also on the national roads, but the patrol inspectors managed the traffic and no incidents were witnessed. “There were minor situations, but not in the central square. There were not unordinary, but ordinary situations that happen daily,” said Viorel Cernăuțeanu.

The protests mounted by the Shor Party in three towns of the country involved fewer than 6,000 citizens and no incidents were recorded there.

The European Moldova Assembly called by President Maia Sandu was planned as an event that will transmit a firm message to the international community about the sincere wish of the Moldovans to be part of the European family. The event is staged ahead of the European Political Community Summit that Moldova will host on June 1.
