Over 6,400 persons voted at 42 polling stations intended for Transnistrians

More than 6,400 persons cast their ballots at the 42 polling stations established for persons residing in the Transnistrian region. The Central Election Commission said that for the first time, persons held in penitentiaries No. 8 and 12 in Bender town can vote in the current elections. Electoral functionaries of the electoral commission of Varnița travelled to the prisons to enable 223 detainees and employees to exercise their right to vote, IPN reports.

CEC president Dorin Cimil told a news conference that 128 voters who are at two placement centers for elderly people and for persons with disabilities in Cocieri can vote with the mobile ballot box.

In general, the electoral process goes smoothly without major incidents. In Varnița yet, a conflict occurred between a local and representatives of veterans who tried to block the access to a polling station. The police had to intervene.

In another development, Dorin Cimil said that about 28,000 persons voted at polling stations abroad by midday. Crowdedness was reported at polling stations in Italy, Germany, Belgium, France, the UK, Ireland, and Romania. Sixteen polling stations will be opened in the U.S. and Canada the next few hours.

At least one third of the voters should cast their ballots for the elections to be validated.
