The efficient management of the refugee crisis was the main challenge experienced by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) in 2022. In a summing up video, the Ministry says that over 600,000 citizens who fled from the war went through Moldova and 86,000 refugees remained in the country, with half of them being children, IPN reports.

Also, the infrastructure was modernized last year. The Ministry was outfitted with last-generation equipment for improving the work conditions of employees, namely of five police inspectorates, three border police sections and two rescue and firefighting subdivisions.

Measures were taken to support cooperation in the field of internal security and border management. For the purpose, a Security Hub of the EU was created in Chisinau. This is an operational mechanism that hosts periodical meetings between the EU member states, European agencies and the authorities of the Republic of Moldova.

As to the signed strategic documents, the Ministry said that the strategic for developing the internal affairs sector for the next nine years was signed in 2022. There was also signed an agreement of cooperation with the EU concerning the activities conducted by the Frontex Agency for efficiently managing the refugee crisis. Also in 2022, the Republic of Moldova joined the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and this will make the interventions more efficient.

The video traffic surveillance system was extended. The response time to deal with calls made to the 112 Service was reduced by 3 minutes. The wasting time in customs posts for trucks that ensure the logistics chain was decreased from six days to 12 hours. Also, the Moldovan driver’s licenses are recognized in Italy, Lithuania and Turkey.

The MIA employees received bonuses to salaries for work provided in conditions of high risk to health, with the allocated amount totaling 313 million lei.
