The emergency refugee accommodation center set up at “Moldexpo” Center welcomed over 2,000 refugees, with 534 of these being children. Currently, the center accommodates more than 600 persons. The municipality of Chisinau said there were identified over 17,000 accommodation paces for Ukrainians who came to the Republic of Moldova after fleeing from the war, IPN reports.

In the ordinary meeting of officials of municipal services that was held today at “Moldexpo”, mayor Ion Ceban said that most of the refugees are in the municipality of Chisinau, either these stop here or just cross the Republic of Moldova. He asked to ensure the necessary supply of drugs and to make approaches to the diplomatic missions, to business entities so as to satisfy the current needs.

The mayor applauded the mobilization of citizens and entrepreneurs who bring food and essential products for the refugees, saying that the aid is also distributed to other localities where refugees stopped.

The center at “Moldexpo” has a capacity of 510 beds, but there were also placed matrasses there. The authorities expect the number of refugees to increase given that the lines at frontier post are very long.

“We prepared and identified sufficient temporary accommodation places in the municipality of Chisinau,” said Boris Gîlca, the head of the General Medical and Social Assistance Division.

The refugees are also offered medical, social, psychological and other kinds of assistance. There was set up a COVID-19 testing unit for refugees with symptoms. A mobile vaccination unit will be opened at “Moldexpo” following requests.

The municipal authorities also provided the refugees who want to travel to bus stations or to border crossing points with units of transport. A sum of 5 million lei was allocated from the reserve fund for buying goods and services that are to be distributed to temporary placement centers. Also, it was decided to apply a simplified procedure for purchasing these goods. According to the municipality, about 50,000 lei was collected so far in bank accounts opened to raise funds for supporting the refugees.
