Officers of the National Anticorruption Center and prosecutors discovered more than 500 Soviet-type passports at the home of the head of the Documents Issuing Section of Chisinau’s Rascani district and in the office of an inferior of his during a search. According to preliminary data, the functionaries used data from old passports to make false identity cards for persons who are not entitled to Moldovan nationality and are even wanted by Interpol, IPN report.

According to a communiqué of the National Anticorruption Center, the functionaries issued false birth certificates in the name of former residents of Moldova, who earlier immigrated to other countries. For the purpose, they used statements concerning the loss of the Soviet-type passport and falsified the passport issuing monitoring document, where they put pictures from youth of these persons and wrote the series and numbers of the ex-Soviet passports of former citizens who emigrated.

On August 4, the prosecutors will ask for arrest warrants against the two functionaries for a period of 72 hours. Two criminal cases were started in this case over abuse of power and forging of public documents. The two face two to six years in jail and will banned from performing particular activities for a period of five to ten years.
