In the Republic of Moldova, crime rates saw a slight increase in 2024 compared to 2023, with over 24,000 reported offenses. However, compared to 2020, the crime rate has declined. Most crimes were committed in urban areas, with Chișinău remaining the most affected city, followed by Balti, Cahul, and Orhei, IPN reports.

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, about one-fifth of the reported crimes are classified as serious, particularly serious, or exceptionally serious. Over the past five years, these categories of crimes have become more frequent, while minor offenses have decreased. Additionally, one in four crimes was committed in public places, and in nearly 100 cases, firearms, explosives, or other dangerous devices were used.

The most common crimes are those against property, followed by transport-related offenses and crimes against public authorities and state security, which have significantly increased compared to last year. On the other hand, the number of cybercrimes has almost halved.

Another concerning trend is the rise in crimes committed by minors, particularly theft, robbery, and acts of hooliganism. In 2024, nearly 500 crimes were committed by or with the involvement of minors - an increase of almost 10% compared to the previous year.

Regarding victims, men are the most affected by reported crimes, while women predominate in cases of domestic violence. As a result of crimes in 2024, nearly 400 people lost their lives, with over 40% of these deaths occurring in road accidents.

Although the number of individuals committing crimes has decreased, the majority of offenders are men. Every day, 30 people are convicted in the first instance, with imprisonment being the most commonly imposed sentence, followed by community service and suspended sentences.

Statistics indicate that while crime levels in Moldova remain relatively stable, certain trends - such as the rise in serious crimes and offenses committed by minors - continue to be a cause for concern in society.
