A functionary of the Orhei City Hall and a cash courier were detained after a raid by law enforcement officers and prosecutors. A black bag with over 600,000 lei in envelopes was seized. Another bag containing over 180,000 lei and €200 in envelopes was confiscated from the courier, IPN reports.
The General Police Inspectorate said that the two persons are over 30 years old. The functionary and her office were searched following reports that members of a political party were to distribute large sums of money of a dubious origin. A black bag with over 600,000 lei in envelopes (with 20,000-50,000 lei in each envelope) was found in a safe in the office. In one of the cabinets of the office, there were found lists of supporters of a current party and a former party, as well as draft documents and the phone of the functionary.
On the same day, the courier was apprehended while driving a luxury car in Straseni, close to Pănășești village. In the trunk of the car, near the spare wheel, law enforcement officers found a black bag containing over 180,000 lei and €200 in envelopes. They also seized a portable computer, a mobile phone, bank cards and a Russian passport of the man who is from Gagauzia, but who lives in Chisinau.
The Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases will ask for 30 days preventive detention for both of the persons who are suspected of involvement in organized criminal activity.
