Six associations of Basarabian students in Romania dissociate themselves from the message of other similar organizations supporting the candidate of the Democrat Liberal Party, Eugen Tomac, to a seat in the Romanian parliament. “We consider that supporting a politician in his campaign, regardless of the party he runs for, runs counter a student NGO's status, which pretends to be non-political,” reads a joint statement issued by six organizations on November 25. “The authors of the statements made in Chisinau do not have the necessary authority to commit to such moves and to speak in our name,” the signatories point out. The six associations say they stick to the principles agreed after discussions in Timisoara this month, according to which the students NGOs should not get involved in politics but act only to support the Basarabian students and pupils. The communique is undersigned by associations of Basarabian students from Cluj, Suceava, Oradea, Galati, Bucharest and Craiova. Representatives of Basarabians students associations from Bucharest, Brasov, Galati and Constanta voiced their support for Eugen Tomac, at a news conference hosted by Info-Prim Neo News Agency. “Eugen Tomac founded the League of Romanian Students from Everywhere in 2000 and unfolded numerous programs supporting the Basarabian students,” said Vlad Durnea, the president of the Basarabian Students Organization from Bucharest.
