As long as Moldova is not governed by democratic forces, strong by virtue of truth, Moldova's way towards reform and stability will go astray, declared the Moldovan opposition parliamentarians during the hearings themed “Moldova and its European Future”, held by Liberal Democrat MEPs in Brussels on May 6, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“The longer the country remains under communist rule, the clearer it becomes for everyone what the Moldova Noastra Alliance (AMN) Party has always maintained: the Voronin Clan has been simulating the pro-European approach with the main purpose of undermining the reform processes”, said AMN leader Serafim Urecheanu in his speech.
According to him, the present regime is the only hindrance to the interaction of the Moldovan society with the European community. The central government sabotages the reforms and Moldova's efforts to adopt European standards by subordinating the press for propaganda purposes, by using the intelligence, prosecutors, police and judges as tools for destroying its opponents, and by making use of 'high-level corruption' in covertly mobilizing huge financial resources in an attempt to remain in power.
The AMN places the Republic of Moldova in the Romanian ethnic and cultural space, and advocates the concept “two states – one nation”. “Moldova's particularity resides in the probability of forming a Moldovan civil nation, inside the state, which would have a Romanian ethnic and cultural core. Our party attaches the highest priority to Moldova's European integration, by plenary joining Europe's political, economic and security structures”, Urecheanu stated.
He added that the European integration priority comes along with the necessity to build a strategic partnership with the United States. The AMN also pleads for a special relationship with Moldova's current main economic partner – Russia, reiterating at the same time the necessity of an unconditional withdrawal of Russian troops from the Moldovan territory and relinquishment by Russia of “its more or less concealed support for the separatist regime in eastern Moldova”.
The AMN notes that a final and irreversible settlement of the Transnistria issue is possible only by internationalizing the settlement process, i.e. by inviting the European Union, the United States and Romania to join us in this process alongside OSCE, Russia and Ukraine. “In fact, we don't want our European integration efforts to depend on the resolution of the Transnistrian conflict. Otherwise, the future of the Republic of Moldova will be to a large extent at the mercy of the separatists in Tiraspol”, added Serafim Urecheanu.
In her speech, the president of the National Liberal Party (PNL) of Moldova, Vitalia Pavlicenco, stated that the Russian influence has brought about a particular modus vivendi of the Moldovan political elite which made it dependent on Moscow. “Moldova is still the orphan of the Cold War, and now it could become the orphan of Europe, too”, declared Pavlicenco.
PNL advocates for the idea of an interstate union with Romania and for a strategic partnership with the neighboring country that would put Moldova on a fast-track accession to the EU. “The state we call the Republic of Moldova is Romanian per se, and not Russian; our population is 80 percent Romanian by nationality, geopolitically called Moldovans and denationalized during the Soviet era”, Pavlicenco pointed out.
She added that the Republic of Moldova “lost the Baltic train to the EU and NATO, then the Romanian and Bulgarian train, and now risks losing the one taken by the Georgians and Ukrainians... We must save ourselves, but the chance of falling pray to the mighty powers is still threatening us, and the European Liberal Democrats should know that”, the PNL leader concluded.
