On May 9, they celebrate in Moldova the victory over fascism in World War II only, not yet in the Great Patriotic War, consider colonel Ion Leahu and Doctor of History Ruslan Shevchenko. In the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, these analyzed the historical truth and manipulation about what is being marked in Moldova on May 9, IPN reports.

Ion Leahu stated that most of the veterans and states celebrate the events that correspond to the reality on May 9, while the manipulation related to the importance of this day remained in the Russian press and, in parts, in the Moldovan press. “Those who say that it is the victory in the Great Patriotic War automatically narrow the importance of this holiday as the war actually affected much more people,” he stated.

Speaking about the negative reactions to the future presence of military vehicles and soldiers in Chisinau on May 9, Ion Leahu said the Russian influence achieved its goal because a part of the population believes that the Americans do only harm, while the Russians are those who do good. The period is favorable for such reactions amid the elections in Transnistria, the presidential elections in Chisinau and the economic and political crisis. Russia does not want to accept that other kinds of opinions can appear in Moldova and it will thus lose its influence in this territory.

Ruslan Shevchenko noted that the Great Patriotic War refers strictly to Russia, not yet to other countries of the former USSR. “To the Baltic States and to Moldova, in particular, because the territories of these states were occupied and nobody asked the people. We can celebrate on May 9 only the victory over fascism. The USSR wasn’t a homeland for us,” he stated.

The historian reminded that the Germans and the Soviets signed the Molotov – Ribbentrop Pact by which they divided the areas of influence. The Soviets afterward needed the assistance of the Americans and others to defend themselves from the former allies. The territory of the current Moldova was initially plundered by the Soviets. The people were deported. So, we cannot speak about liberation here.

NATO military vehicles that are taking part in a joint military exercise together with the National Army are to be displayed in central Chisinau on May 9. Political parties and NGOs opposed these plans, saying they will prevent the military vehicles from entering the capital city.
