Moldova will carry on its commitments assumed in front of the Council of Europe (CoE), now implementing a Plan of relevant measures to consolidate democracy, Premier Vasile Tarlev stated during a meeting with the PACE rapporteurs, Josette Durrieu and Egidijus Vareikis, who are on a fact-finding visit to Moldova.
Premier informed the CoE officials on the implementation of institutional reforms carried out in Moldova. Vasile Tarlev voiced the Moldovan Government’s willingness to follow the way of developing Moldova’s democracy and implementing European standards thoroughly.
PM also highly appreciated the activity of the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM), asserting that during its one-year activity EUBAM achieved progress in border security. In addition, the head of the Government pleaded for extending the EUBAM mandate, as well as for giving additional authorizations to the Mission.
Josette Durrieu announced about the interest of the structure she represents in the democratic processes in Moldova and confirmed CoE’s further assistance of the in supporting reforms.
CoE official mentioned that the activity of the democratic institutions contributes decisively to the promotion of Moldova’s image worldwide. Moreover, according to Josette Durrieu, it represents a clear message for the European institutions in the context of Moldova’s aspirations to adhere to the European Union.
The PACE mission’s visit agenda includes meetings with the speaker of Parliament Marian Lupu, President Vladimir Voronin, members of the Government, as well as nongovernmental organizations in the field of combating organized crime, trafficking in persons, corruption and mass media NGOs. PACE officials will also meet the director of “Teleradio-Moldova” Company and the chairman of the Broadcasting Coordinating Council. PACE rapporteurs will pay a visit to the Transnistrian region and the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia.
