As of today, January 28, the operational procedures of the Moldovan Energy Market Operator (OPEM) officially enter into force. They will allow short-term electricity trading, including from renewable sources, IPN reports.

Electricity will be traded through two markets: the Day-ahead Market (PZU) and the Day-ahead Market (PPZ).

The aim of the procedures is to form prices and establish a transparent and efficient mechanism for buying and selling electricity.

In this way, OPEM contributes to a flexible market, allowing real-time adjustment of suppliers' portfolios and faster integration into the European energy market.

OPEM is a subsidiary of the Romanian energy operator OPCOM and was appointed to manage the Moldovan energy market early last year.

The process of synchronization of the Moldovan energy system with the European one started in March 2022, when Moldova and Ukraine connected their electricity grids to the ENTSO-E continental grid.

At present, 84 Moldovan companies are licensed to supply electricity, but only two suppliers are active on the competitive market with small market shares. The launch of the OPEM could change the situation and Moldova's energy market could become much freer and more competitive, say ANRE representatives.
