One third of those diagnosed with COVID-19 have the Omicron variant. According to epidemiological calculations and estimates, the Omicron variant constituted 34.2% of the preselected samples, as opposed to 10% as a result of the previous examinations, director of the National Public Health Agency Nicolae Jelamschi told a new conference, being quoted by IPN.

Out of the 16 tested samples, 13 were the Omicron variant. Eleven of those tested were men, while five were women. Three of the cases were registered in Chisinau, two cases in Ungheni and Cimișlia and by one case in Briceni, Orhei, Anenii Noi, Căușeni, Criuleni and Dubăsari. The patients are aged between 20 and 70. Out of the 16 persons, ten were unvaccinated, while six were vaccinated. Nine are under home treatment, while seven are in the hospital with moderate forms.

The cases of Omicron in Moldova are higher in number than in Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic states, but are lower in number than in Romania. The incidence rate the past seven days was 642 cases per 100,000, Moldova being at the end of the list of the European countries by this index. Compared with the second week of this year, the third week witnessed a 2.5 time increase in the number of COVID-19 cases. However, the number of associated deaths declined.

The country is on red alert, except for several districts. The incidence rate on the left side of the Nistru is 499 cases per 100,000 people. As many as 251 cases of import, primarily from Ukraine, Ro mania, Russia and Italy, were reported last week.

The vaccination rate is the highest in Chisinau, Soroca and Dubăsari and is the lowest in ATU Gagauz-Yeri, Sângerei, Leova and Fălești.

The number of acute respiratory infections went up. “The figure is by 55% higher than last week and 3.1 times higher than in the corresponding period last year,” stated Nicolae Jelamschi.
