The Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM) expresses its concern and indignation at President Vladimir Voronin’s statement that “... he is not president of the Romanians”, made during a news conference on December 19. The party expressed its position in a press release issued on the same day.
The party is quoted by Info-Prim Neo as saying that “following the recent hostile outbursts against Romania and the adoption of the law that bans the public functionaries from holding dual nationality, this assertion shows lack of responsibility that can further destabilise the situation in the country.”
PLDM points out that according to the stipulations of the Constitution, the president of Moldova is the president of all the country’s citizens regardless of the ethnicity. All are loyal citizens of the state and all should benefit from the care of the state institutions, including of the president, without discrimination.
The Liberal Democratic Party warns the public opinion that the hazardous attitude of the head of state towards such sensitive issues as the identity as well as the repeated attacks on the national symbols lead to the segregation of the society and this fact can have unexpected consequences for the future of Moldova as a state which the Communists say they protect.
In another statement, PLDM says that the president’s assertions that the party was created by persons that had held important public positions in the past are perilous. According to the party, the president’s statements team up with the insinuations made by different obscure political forces with the aim of manipulating and misinforming the public opinion.
