It is not clear why Iulian Rusu resigned from the post of director of the National Anticorruption Center (NAC), said PAS MP Olesea Stamate. According to the head of the Parliament’s legal commission for appointments and immunities, the resignation of the NAC director implies the ending of the term in office of his deputies and the legislative body is to name a new director with full powers so as to avoid the scenario of interim administration, IPN reports.

On October 10, Iulian Rusu tendered his resignation from the post of NAC director. The announcement was made by Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, who noted that he took cognizance of the resignation decision. The representatives of the government for now haven’t explained the reasons for this resignation.

“This resignation is not clear to me too, especially because it came in the election campaign, now that investigations into the illegal financing of parties and election campaigns are conducted. What I would not like to see is interim administration and even the law on the NAC doesn’t stipulate something like this. The law on the NAC says that the deputies are named for the term in office of the director. When the director’s term in office ends, the terms in office of the deputies also end and it is unclear if an interim director can be named or not. It is not good to have interim administration at this institution or at the Prosecutor General’s Office. Therefore, the objective is to name another person with full powers,” Olesea Stamate stated in the program “Secrets of the Power” on JurnalTV channel.

Political commentator Anatol Țăranu said the government should explain the happening internal processes to society as the lack of transparency is incompatible with the aspirations to become an authentic European and democratic state.

“We can draw the conclusion that Dragalin beat Rusu. There was a conflict we all saw. This conflict developed before the eyes of the public. The result is that Rusu resigned, while Dragalin celebrates. When there are no explanations, the ordinary people draw their own conclusions. I often told the ruling party that if they don’t provide explanations, their political opponents will explain. Why do they keep silent? Why don’t they provide explanations? The PAS is turning into a closed corporation. It is a party that rules the Republic of Moldova and the interests of each person in this country are concerned. We, the ordinary people, have the right to wonder what’s happening to the party mechanisms that influence our destinies. Why do they hide all these things? Regrettably, democracy in the Republic of Moldova is at an incipient stage in this regard,” stated Anatol Țăranu.

In accordance with the law, the director of the National Anticorruption Center is named by a majority of votes of MP at the suggestion of at least 20 MPs, with the approval of the Parliament’s legal commission for appointments and immunities. The NAC director serves a five-year term and cannot be appointed for another term.
