The Republic of Moldova is the beneficiary of a common geopolitical context, historian Octavian Țîcu said, commenting on the European Council’s decision to open accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova. According to him, the Republic of Moldova is privileged compared with other states, which have waited at the EU’s gates. Octavian Țîcu said the Russian Federation is the main challenge that hampers the accession to the EU. This tries, by all ways, to block this process, IPN reports.

The ex-MP noted that the European leaders’ decision to open accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova was influenced by the geopolitical context, by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and by the pro-European option of the Moldovan citizens. The fact that the ruling party didn’t secure a majority of votes in the local elections of this November is a negative signal in the perspective of the upcoming elections.

“We are the beneficiaries of an absolutely unique geopolitical context. The gates of the European Union were opened widely to us in an absolutely unhoped way. For particular states, the entry into the EU means a very thorny process. Turkey for tens of years has struggled to enter the EU. The question is why the pro-European and unionist parties in 2023 didn’t manage to raise to the level of the signal that was given to us in Brussels?  The local elections showed that the pro-European course is not supported by the majority of citizens of the Republic of Moldova. The elections are the best poll. They show the field reality and the reality is that the pro-European parties that are represented mainly by the PAS didn’t manage to obtain over 60% of the votes, which is the mass of the votes. As we have presidential elections next year and parliamentary elections in a year, this is a very worrisome signal,” Octavian Țîcu stated in the program “Reflection Points” on  Vocea Basarabiei station.

According to the historian, Russia will use all the available instruments to stop Moldova’s integration into the EU and the Kremlin’s strategy is put into practice by pro-Russian politicians in Chisinau.

“Russia remains the main threat for the Republic of Moldova as is seriously destabilizes the political context, first of all through the large number of its agents inside political parties, through  leaders of pro-Putinist political parties, through the Transnistrian separatism that Russia continues to maintain, through the Gagauz separatism on which they work intensely, through the agency of different economic instruments it possesses. All these things have an effect. In Naslavcea, where a Russian rocket fell down, Dodon’s Socialist Party won. The people don’t understand that the Russian rockets will not stop to see either you are Gagauz or Romanian. The people continue to see things through the angle of the leases shaped by Șor or Dodon,” stated Octavian Țîcu.

On December 14, the European Council decided to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, while granting Georgia candidate status. The EU will also open negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina once the necessary degree of compliance with the membership criteria is reached.
