The National Unity Party candidate for mayor of the capital, Octavian Țîcu, wants sports schools to become sports clubs. Additionally, the candidate intends to build a municipal sports club on a 24 thousand square meter lot of land on Melestiu street.
Octavian Țîcu said that currently there are 13 sports schools that are subordinated to City Hall, including the specialized sports school of handball no 2 from Melestiu street, 21. In a press conference held in front of the institution, the candidate pointed out that the building is in an advanced state of degradation, which is similar to the situation of other sports schools. According to the candidate, who is a former professional boxer, the creation of sports schools and performance sports clubs would give a new life to the field of sport.
Asked about the creation of the municipal sports club, Octavian Țîcu said that concept was initiated in 2013, when he was the minister of youth and sport. The complex will house spaces for the main sports events, an Olympic swimming pool, as well as a hotel for athletes and guests. According to the candidate, the building cost of the municipal sports club is not high. The cost is estimated at five million euros. In his opinion, under the proper management of public money, this project is a feasible one.
