Over 5.4 million people die annually in the world because of lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases and smoke-related diseases. Unless concrete measures are undertaken to stop the tobacco-related pandemics, by 2030 the figure may soar to 8 million, reads a communiqué of the Health Ministry, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. The world community marks the International No Smoking Day on May 31. According to data issued by the World Health Organization, smoking is a risk factor of at least six of those eight main causes leading to death. Globally, the number of smoking youths is on a rise, the situation being characteristic to Moldova, too. According to a survey carried out by the Prevenctive Mecicine National Center, 15% of pupils aged from 13 to 15 smoke (24.0% boys and 8.9% girls). From the total number of respondents, 43% tried to smoke and 46% of them had the experience before reaching 10. The main way to prevent the tobacco consumption is informing on the severe consequences of smoking. According to specialists, the most serious effects of inhaling smoke makes themselves felt in several decades, but there also immediate effects as enhanced heart beat and arterial pressure, damages to mouth tissues, yellow teeth, nose and throat irritations, coughing, reduced resistance to respiratory infections. In women’s cases there is a risk of spontaneous abortions, of giving birth to children with psychical and physical handicaps. All the tobacco products, regardless of their quality, contain noxious substances affecting the body and changing the metabolism in nervous cells, deregulating the functions of the vital centers responsible for respiration and cardio-vascular activity.
