November 5 declared national day of mourning for plastic artist Valentina Rusu-Ciobanu

The funeral of plastic artist Valentina Rusu-Ciobanu will be held on November 5, when it will be a national day of mourning in Moldova. A decree to this effect was signed by President Maia Sandu. The mourning was instituted in gratitude for the merits of the famous painter who will be commemorated for promoting the national and universal cultural values, IPN reports.

In accordance with the presidential decree, the national flag on November 5 will be flown at half-mast all over Moldova. At midday, Valentina Rusu-Ciobanu will be honored by a moment’s silence. The funeral will be broadcast live by the public broadcaster “Teleradio-Moldova”.

The public authorities, enterprises and organizations are recommended not to stage recreational activities on November 5, while the editorial staffs of newspapers, TV channels and radio stations are asked to take into account the particularities of this day when editing publications and compiling programs.



Valentina Rusu-Ciobanu was born in Chisinau on October 28, 1920. She studied in Iasi. In spite of the ideological pressure she felt throughout most of her career, Valentina Rusu Ciobanu managed to preserve the individuality of her artistic discourse and was even subsequently awarded notable governmental distinctions, such as the Republic of Moldova National Award for Literature, Art and Architecture; the honorary title People’s Visual Artist; the Medal of the Republic. She also became an Honorary Citizen of Chisinau and was awarded, by a decree of the Romanian President Klaus Werner Iohannis, the Order of Cultural Merit in the rank of Grand Officer.

The artist mounted multiple exhibitions in the country and abroad, in Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Canada, Syria, Iraq, France. Her works were exhibited at the National Museum of Arts of Moldova that keeps an important collection of the artist’s paintings, at the Exhibitions Center “Constantin Brâncuși”, at the National Library of the Republic of Moldova. Her paintings can be seen in art galleries in many countries.
