As of February 6, the police inspectorates and remand prisons will be issued with a Letter of Rights for Detained Persons. This is an instrument for informing the detained persons about the rights guaranteed by law while they are in police custody. The initiative forms part of the partnership between the General Police Inspectorate and Soros Foundation Moldova, IPN reports, quoting the Inspectorate.
“The Republic of Moldova made considerable progress in ensuring the observance of human rights and this became visible to society,” said Victor Munteanu, Director of the Law Program of Soros Foundation Moldova.
The Letter of Rights for Detained Persons will be issued in the form of posters in the Romanian, Russian, English and Gagauz languages. It informs the persons in police custody that they have rights to be offered assistance by a lawyer, to be informed about the reasons for the arrest, to keep silent, to contact by phone the relatives or other persons, to benefit from medical assistance and others.
