The modernization of public libraries in the six districts that won the first national round of the program “Novateca” is underway. Deputy Minister of Culture Igor Sarov said it is a project that aims to transform the libraries into a platform for access to information and continuous learning, IPN reports.

The process of modernizing and introducing innovations in libraries was launched by the Ministry of Culture and IREX Moldova, with Ialoveni, Rezina, Soldanesti, Orhei, Hancesti and Telenesti districts being the beneficiaries at national level.

By the end of this year, the public libraries included in the program will be outfitted with computers, software and peripheral devices. In the first national round of the program, over 1,000 computers will be distributed to 350 libraries to ensure the people’s access to the Internet. The book stock will be supplemented, including with electronic books, and about 800 librarians will attend IT courses to acquire skills and learn to develop new library services.

The pilot stage of “Novateca” implemented earlier covered 68 national public libraries.
