The Ministry of Environment says there is no reason for Moldovans to be concerned about radiation levels. After the military takeover of the Chernobyl disaster site on February 25 in the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Ministry said in a press release that Moldova is measuring radiation levels every 10 minutes.

Moldova operates seven manual monitoring stations, and five automatic ones. Manual checks are performed twice a day at 7:00AM and 9:00PM, while automatic monitoring is carried out continuously.

During March 1-3, ambient gamma radiation levels ranged from 0.15-0.22 µSv/h (microsieverts per hour), which count as “stable”. For Moldova, levels up to 0.25 µSv/h are considered safe.

Those interested in following radiation levels online may do so on Remap, a platform run by the European Commission’s Radioactivity Environmental Monitoring group.
