When Moldova gained independence, everyone wanted the Latin script, the Romanian language, anthem and tricolor. But this is not enough as democracy and independence are frail in Moldova, actress Ninela Caranfil has told IPN in the context of the Independence Day.

“Regretfully, we wanted a different kind of independence. The Russian army didn’t leave the Transnistrian region. We still depend on the Russian gas. We are now facing Russia’s ban. The struggle is hard and continuous. It’s not known what the end will be like. Anyway, I’m optimistic because, when we started the struggle, the national liberation movement, we had a vigorous impulse we could not contain and this happened to all the crowds that walked from Briceni, Cahul to Chisinau to struggle for independence,” stated the actress.

According to Ninela Caranfil, the struggle began in 1812, since when the Russians have made effort to transform this people into something else than it is in reality. But they didn’t succeed because a divine spark exists in the souls of our people, which allows no one to change our identity. “The struggle is lasting. A lot depends on this autumn, which will be crucial for the life of our people. Will we be or not? Will we survive as a nation or not? A lot depends on each of us, on our conscience,” said the actress.

On August 27, Moldova marks 23 years of independence.
