No one will help or protect Moldova if it does not invest in its own protection. There is a need for strong and functional law enforcement institutions, capable of defending the country from hybrid attacks and risks threatening Moldova, including in the airspace, said the former Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, referring to the violation of Moldova’s airspace by Russian drones, IPN reports.
Nicu Popescu noted that air defense is not built overnight and does not guarantee a 100% success rate, and the development of functional systems takes years or even decades, involving investments and training. "Israel, which has been investing massively for over 70 years in its own defense capabilities, does not have a 100% success rate and, recently, has been helped to protect its airspace by the military forces of other states – the U.S., France, Jordan and the UK," stated the former deputy premier, specifying that every percentage in a state's defense capacity means lives saved and property protected.
The ex-minister said that Moldova has and will need both more high-performance radars and modern interceptors. "Even if the effects of these investments will be felt over time, not acting now means endangering the lives of our citizens. The neglect of defense for three decades, either out of naivety or ill intention, has left the country vulnerable," stated Nicu Popescu.
During Russia’s massive drone and missile attack on Ukraine, explosions in the regions neighboring the Republic of Moldova were reported by patrols of the Border Police in Valea Perjei, Tudora, Crocmaz and Olănești. Also, two drones flew over two localities in northern Moldova.
