Nicu Popescu: Moldova’s population grew by 4% as a result of war in Ukraine

Following the invasion of Ukraine, the population of the Republic of Moldova rose by 4% and the schools, hospitals and other institutions will need to be adjusted, Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, stated in a news conference.

He noted that since the start of the armed conflict in Ukraine, over 300,000 Ukrainian refugees crossed Moldova’s borders and 1/3 of them stopped in Moldova. Most of the refugees are housed by people.

The new conference was given together with the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany Annalena Baerbock. The official said that Germany hosts over 110,000 Ukrainian refugees even if it does not have a direct border with Ukraine. Also, Germany will accept another 2,500 Ukrainian refugees who are now in the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.
