Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, said that after an important period during which the Republic of Moldova successfully implemented the European Union’s recommendations, the EU member states gave the green light to open the accession negotiations. The European Council’s decision is a historic moment for the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.

Nicu Popescu noted that this decision is historic and marks the most important step made by the Republic of Moldova so far towards the integration into the big family of the European Union.

“Over the past few years, we have cooperated closely with all the state institutions so as to do essential reforms. The fulfillment of the European Commission’s recommendations in the proportion of 94% is a clear proof of our determination to make concrete changes and to bring the Republic of Moldova to the European standards. We are on the right path and are resolute to continue this transformation,” stated the official.

“Congratulations to us all on this important decision that irreversibly opens the way to the big family of the European Union – a space of peace, security and democracy”.

On Thursday, the European Council decided to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova and to grant the EU candidate status to Georgia. The EU will also open negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina once the necessary degree of compliance with the membership criteria is reached. The European Commission was invited to report on this by March so that a decision could be taken.
