Nicu Popescu had a very good performance as Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration and managed to ensure a consistent diplomatic effort, said the deputy director of the Institute for European Policies and Reforms (IPRE) Mihai Mogîldea. For his part, MP of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) Dorian Istratii expressed his conviction that the new head of the diplomatic service Mihai Popșoi will succeed in continuing the diplomatic performance of his predecessor. He noted that Mihai Popșoi is the most suitable PAS member for the position of minister of foreign affairs, IPN notes.

On Wednesday, after a tenure of two and a half years, Nicu Popescu resigned from the position of minister of foreign affairs and European integration. He will be replaced by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Mihai Popșoi.

“Mihai Popșoi will have to keep it up and improve the process further, to involve more specialists in this process. We believe Mihai Popșoi will handle it. Out of all our colleagues, he is the best suited for this position. It’s clear that he must continue what has been done so far and follow the same course,” PAS MP Dorian Istratii stated in the program “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

IPRE deputy director Mihai Mogildea Mogîldea praised Nicu Popescu for his work as minister of foreign affairs, noting that he managed to get Moldova out of international isolation and turn the European dream into a tangible reality.

“Nicu Popescu had a very good performance, with many achievements, many efforts made to ensure better dynamics in the relations with European states and not only. We saw the impressive number of visits he made abroad, but also the number of high-ranking officials who came to the Republic of Moldova. Nicu Popescu managed to ensure a consistent diplomatic effort. We must also point out the international financial support that came to our country during this period. As for the appointment of Mihai Popșoi, I note that since Dorin Recean took over as head of government, the ministers have been appointed from the political core of the party. It is an appointment assumed politically by the party. From within the party, Mihai Popșoi is probably the most suitable one for this post, including in terms of the position he had as Deputy Speaker of Parliament,” stated Mihai Mogîldea.

On Wednesday, President Maia Sandu honored Nicu Popescu with the Order of the Republic – the highest state award. Nicu Popescu was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration in August 2021, in the Cabinet led by Natalia Gavrilița.
