Moldova’s President Nicolae Timofti is for the direct election of the head of state and for giving the President more prerogatives. He made such statements in the program “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.
Speaking about the election of the head of state, Nicolae Timofti said the basic law should be amended and the form of government should be modified into semi-presidential republic. “We must modify the Constitution so as to avoid a new political crisis when time comes to elect the President. I think the people should be able again to choose the head of state themselves,” he stated.
The President also pleaded for providing more prerogatives to the head of state. “The President’s powers should be reviewed. The head of state has limited prerogatives and powers and cannot intervene in certain situations. This runs counter to a number of articles of the Constitution. For example, the fundamental law stipulates that the President is the supreme commander of the armed forces, but he does not have the right to name or dismiss the minister of defense,” he said.
The head of state noted that a bill is being drafted to amend the Constitution. “In general, our Constitution is good, but life goes on. The situation in our country is different from that in the U.S., where the Constitution is several hundred years old,” said Nicolae Timofti.
