The NGO “Renașterea Rurală” (Rural Revival) is launching a campaign, called “Adopt a sensor”, where members of the public are encouraged to sponsor the installation of air quality monitors.
The sensors will be integrated on special platforms and maps and will be part of a global network, the NGO’s executive director, Vladimir Ursu, told a press conference on Monday.
One such monitor costs about 200 euros. “The ones we imported are a Polish brand, but are assembled in Romania. Our platforms can process information from other types of sensors as well, but it’s a good idea to consult with us first if those interested would like to buy a different brand. We are open to everyone”, said Vladimir Ursu.
Silvian Răcilă, project coordinator, said that, while air quality in Chisinau is relatively good, it is still important to constantly monitor it. “One of our goals is to prevent the appearance of factors that will lead to air pollution in Chisinau. As long as we have at least good air quality, it is important to take measurements so that the situation does not get out of control”.
Răcilă urged interested individuals and businesses to sponsor air quality monitors and install them near their offices or homes. So far, the NGO has installed ten such sensors in Chisinau, while 20-30 sensors are needed for effective air quality monitoring. The NGO’s plan is to eventually extend the network throughout Moldova.
