New helipads to accommodate SMURD air ambulances will be built in both Romania and Moldova. The effort is part of a broader project that seeks to strengthen the capacity and training of professional personnel to intervene in emergency situations in the cross-border area of Romania and Moldova, said Romania’s Department for Emergency Situations.

Of the seven helipads to be built, four will be located in Moldova, beside hospitals in Chisinau, Balti and Cahul.

In addition to the helipads, two emergency admission units will be constructed in Chisinau and Balti.

Moreover, in order to increase SMURD’s operational capacity in Moldova, 14 ambulances will be bought.

Generically named SMURD-2, the current project is a follow-up of a project implemented in 2013-2015, which aimed to consolidate cooperation between Romanian and Moldovan emergency and rescue authorities with a view to improving the safety of the population and protecting lives and property.

The transborder project SMURD-2 is financed by the European Union and has a budget of over 10 million euros. The project should be completed by the end of 2022.
