The Superior Council of Prosecutors (SCP) next Monday will initiate a new contest to select the candidate for the position of prosecutor general. The issue is on the agenda of the meeting scheduled for April 15, IPN reports.

The agenda of Monday’s SCP meeting also includes the amendment of the regulations on the organization and conduct of the contest to choose the candidate for the position of prosecutor general.

The extraordinary meeting of the Superior Council of Prosecutors is set to start at 2 p.m.

On February 28, the SCP decided to end the competition for the position of prosecutor general after Council member Olesea Varlan reduced the score of one of the candidates for prosecutor general. The given CSP member tendered her resignation. At the same time, after the cancellation of the contest, the head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office Veronica Dragalin announced that an investigation will be launched to elucidate the causes of the candidate’s depunctation and to determine whether it was a mistake or abuse.

Prosecutor General Alexandru Stoianoglo was suspended from office at the beginning of October 2021 and was then dismissed, at the end of September 2023. The presidential decree to dismiss him was based on the SCP’s decision of May 2022, saying that the prosecutor general’s performance was unsatisfactory. The post was held on an interim basis by Dumitru Robu and then by Ion Munteanu.
