The assassination of politician Boris Nemtsov shows that the Russian society is going down a very dangerous slope and this is one more black spot on the image of what is called the Russian world and the contemporary Russia, especially amid the war in Ukraine and the worsening of the international situation following Russia’s actions, considers the director of the Institute for Research and Political Consultancy “Politicon” Anatol Taranu, who was Moldova’s Ambassador to Moscow in 1993-1994.

Contacted by IPN, Anatol Taranu said that Nemtsov’s assassination forms part of the wave of chauvinism that becomes dominant in Russian society. “The assassination of such a representative of the Russian political class is a case showing that a serious disease attacked Russian society. We will yet see who staged this assassination and what is there behind it. I think all the countries of the world, first of all the neighbors of Russia, must think how to conceive the relations with this country because the symptoms are very serious. Boris Nemtsov was the most famous representative of the Russian political opposition, which is very week, but which had the courage to argue against the current regime and against President Vladimir Putin,” he stated.

He also said that the reasons and the organizers of the assassination are yet to be identified, but this criminal action anyway imprints a big spot on the Russian political regime and shows that the wave of chauvinism starts to cause victims among the most prominent representatives of the Russian political class.

Russian oppositionist Boris Nemtsov was killed in central Moscow in the evening of February 27. An individual fired on Nemtsov from a car and the politician died on the spot. The Russian police reported shortly that about seven shots were fired at the politician and at least four bullets reached him.
