Almost half of the drivers in the Transnistrian region hold national driving licenses, according to data from the Public Services Agency. The authorities attribute the high number to the simplified process for license equivalency, IPN reports.

This mechanism was in place until the end of last year. In 2024, a total of 6,727 driving licenses were issued, which is about 20% more than in 2023.

In August 2024, the process of primary documentation resumed at vehicle registration points in the cities of Tiraspol and Ribnita.

Starting in 2025, both a theoretical and practical exam will be mandatory, depending on the vehicle category, for which the driving license equivalency is requested.
