With a probability of 95%, the natural gas will come to Moldova through the traditional route after January 1, 2020 as well. Even so, the authorities made sure there is an alternative scenario. In a video interview for IPN News Agency, Prime Minister Ion Chicu said the risk of disrupting the supply of gas to Moldova has always existed, but the people can be sure that everything will be fine after January 1.
He noted that the natural gas and electricity supply sources should be diversified so as to ensure the country’s energy security. In this regard, a US$ 60 million agreement to connect the country’s energy system to the European system was signed with the World Bank.
There is also the Iași-Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipeline. Ion Chicu said the first real step to make sure the gas pipeline becomes functional next year was taken the previous days, when the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development approved the financing for this gas pipeline intended for the Romanian developer. “But this pipeline cannot supply the whole country with gas and if the gas does not come from Gazprom, Romania will also not have enough gas and will be unable to give some to others,” he explained.
Ion Chicu noted that until there is no official gas transit deal between Ukraine and Russia, all the state institutions remain on the alert.
